How to Install Ringtones (iPhone & Android)

Follow these quick steps to add your ringtones from ringtones.ai to your phone. No accounts, no uploads—just generate, download, and set.

Before you begin

  • Ringtone length: 20–30s works best.
  • Formats: we provide WAV & MP3; iPhone installs via GarageBand or Finder; Android accepts MP3 directly.
  • Keep volume moderate to avoid distortion on tiny phone speakers.

Install on iPhone (iOS)

The easiest method is using GarageBand on your iPhone. No Mac needed.

Method A — GarageBand (on iPhone)

  1. On ringtones.ai, tap Download MP3 (or WAV). Save to the Files app (e.g., On My iPhone/Downloads).
  2. Open GarageBand → tap + → create a new “Audio Recorder” or “Keyboard” project.
  3. Tap the Tracks view (little bar icon). Tap the Loops icon → FilesBrowse items and import your file.
  4. Drag the file onto the track. Ensure the project length covers your file (tap the + at the right end of the timeline to extend sections if needed).
  5. Tap the down arrow (top-left) → My Songs. Long-press your project → ShareRingtone.
  6. Name it → ExportUse sound as… → set as Ringtone (or assign to contact).

Tip: If it says the file is too long, trim in GarageBand or generate a shorter tone (20–30s is ideal).

Method B — Finder/Music (on Mac)

  1. On your Mac, download the ringtone (MP3/WAV). Open in the Music app.
  2. Select the track → File > Convert > Create AAC Version. Right-click the new AAC file → Show in Finder.
  3. Rename the file extension from .m4a to .m4r (Ringtone format).
  4. Connect iPhone with a cable. Open Finder → select your iPhone in the sidebar → go to the Tones section (or drag directly onto the device name if Tones isn’t visible) → drag the .m4r in to sync.
  5. On iPhone: Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone → choose your tone.

Note: Recent macOS versions hide “Tones” sometimes—dragging the .m4r directly onto the device entry in Finder still works.

Install on Android

Android accepts MP3 directly. Most devices let you set it from Settings or the Files app.

Method A — From Settings

  1. Download the ringtone MP3 to your phone.
  2. Open Settings > Sound & vibration > Ringtone (path may vary slightly by brand).
  3. Choose Add ringtone or From files → select your downloaded MP3.
  4. Confirm. That’s it!

Method B — Files / Ringtones folder

  1. Open the Files app and move the MP3 into the Ringtones folder (create it if it doesn’t exist).
  2. Go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Ringtone → select the file you just moved.
  3. For per-contact tones: open a contact → menu → Set ringtone → choose your MP3.

Tip: Some devices cache the ringtone list; if you don’t see it immediately, reboot or re-open Settings.

FAQ & Tips

What length should I use?

We recommend 20–25 seconds for ringtones. Use 10 seconds for notifications/alerts.

Why does iPhone need GarageBand or Finder?

iOS requires ringtones to be in .m4r format and installed via an Apple-approved flow. GarageBand (on iPhone) is the quickest way—no Mac required.

My tone sounds quiet or distorted on phone speakers

Small speakers emphasize mids/highs. Try lowering reverb, reducing bass notes, or choosing a brighter genre (e.g., Chiptune, EDM). Generating at 20–25s also helps the loop feel natural.

Will the ringtone loop?

Most phones loop until the call ends or you answer. If you want a hard stop, keep tails short (we already trim them).

What formats does ringtones.ai export?

WAV and MP3 in-browser. iPhone installs via GarageBand or Finder. Android accepts MP3 directly.
